THE ACADEMY AT MSU OPENS DOORS FOR SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS The Academy at Mountain State University is excited about heading into a new school year; excited because they are now offering classes for sixth grade students. “The Academy is really growing,” states Dr. Jill Hopkins, Dean of The Academy at MSU. “Our new 6th grade class has a fifteen-to-one student-teacher ratio, and we’ve already filled one class. We expect to fill another in the upcoming weeks.” The growing popularity of The Academy is based in part on the challenging curriculum designed around its students’ interest. Students learn strong oral and written communication skills while developing at their own pace and skill level. Tailored feedback from faculty members ensures that each student receives individualized education in a safe and structured learning environment. Another factor in the increasing attendance at The Academy is the cultural and moral education of its students, fostering a sense of self-worth, dignity, and respect for others. All students must adhere to an honor code that stresses honesty and respect, and all students participate in community service each year. “The Academy Students have completed a number of service-learning activities that have had a direct, positive impact on our area,” states April Trent, Assistant Dean. “They’ve collected canned foods for the United Way, participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and collected toys and toiletries for the Women’s Resource Center. We want our students to become responsible leaders and stewards in the community, and we’re excited to be able to offer these educational opportunities to a new age-group of students this year.” Because The Academy is located on the Beckley Campus of Mountain State University, these sixth-grade students will have many resources at hand that few other local schools can offer. Academy students take advantage of the University’s library and media centers, of cultural offerings, and of its advanced technology center. In addition, The Academy offers students several athletic options, as well as a myriad of student clubs and organizations. “Opening the doors of The Academy to a new age-group of students is one more way we can affect positive change early in a student’s life,” states Dr. Hopkins. “In response to demand in the community, we will also soon open classes for fifth graders. The opportunity to encourage curiosity, insight, and talent in children of this age motivates us to continue our growth.” Parents who would like to learn more about The Academy at Mountain State University and its programs may contact Jill Hopkins at 304.929.1740, or online at http://academy.mountainstate.edu. |
