School Profile

The Academy at Mountain State Universtiy was established in September of 2002. The school is located on the campus of Mountain State Universtiy. The school's mascot is the falcon, and the school's colors are green and blue (with orange serving as the third school color).

Location

The Academy at Mountain State University is located in the heart of downtown Beckley, West Virginia and is two and one half miles west of Interstate 77S/64E.

The Campus

• The original school facility is located on 10 acres of land and contains 50,000 square feet. Academy students also attend in seat classes on the universtiy campus.

• The library is located on the second floor of the Robert C. Byrd Learning Resource Center or LRC. It offers extensive holdings of books, videotapes, print periodical subscriptions, and electronic resources. An open computer lab with 40 workstations is available for student use during library hours.

• The university bookstore or Cougar Shop located at 410 Neville Street provides all required written and school supply materials needed by Academy students.

• The Academy utilizes the university Van Meter Gymnasium for physical eduation classes, recess, volleyball, and boys/girls basketball games. Academy students also have a membership with the Beckley YMCA giving them access to weight rooms, fitness center, and an indoor pool.

• Remodeling during the 2007-2008 year updated the Academy administrative building including a new welcome area. To accommodate growth, a locker room/"senior room" has been added to the Academy school building and improvements have been made to the original locker area. To accomodate the addition of fifth and sixth grade students, a new lunch room was built.

The School Crest

An explanation of the various parts of the crest is as follows:

The Falcon is the school mascot and symbolizes the students who attend the Academy in the pursuit of exceptional knowledge.

The Mountain symbolizes the beautiful scenery of Southern West Virginia in which our school is located.

The Flame of Knowledge is also the symbol of Mountain State University and is used in the Academy crest to represent our creation by the university.

The Microscope symbolizes the importance placed on academics at the Academy.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Academy is to develop competent, confident, and curious students through challenging and integrative college-preparatory studies. Our students will have the knowledge, tools, and leadership experiences to excel in their future academic endeavors and in life.
